Dogs & Blogs....

On 19 May 2006, David Miliband the recently appointed Secretary of State for Defra wrote in a blog on the Derfra website:

"We are a nation of animal lovers and believe that animals should be treated accordingly. Aged nine, and just bitten by a dog, I might have felt that they should also treat us appropriately. But I have got over that and am delighted to find myself responsible for the Department that owns the government’s policies on the health and welfare of animals. The Animal Welfare Bill is a real force for good: for the first time it puts into law not just that people should not cause suffering, but that they should take positive steps to look after their animals' welfare. It starts its Committee stage in the House of Lords next week."

BIG PHARMA

The great pleasure of a dog is that you may make a fool of yourself with him and not only will he not scold you, but he will make a fool of himself too.[Samuel Butler 1835-1902]

Some useful sources of information available on the internet:

The NOAH (National Office of Animal Health) Compendium of Data Sheets for Animal Medicines is an excellent source of information to find out more about veterinary medicinal products. You can search the compendium by therapeutic indication, datasheet, active ingredient, species or pharmaceutical company.

Searching by company name e.g. Pfizer or Bayer gives useful contact information such as fax number and email address. Having access to the datasheets showing contraindications and warnings is a HUGE plus point for us humans with responsibility for our furred or feathered friends.

More about pet food...

Some advice from Andrew Jones DVM (Doctor of Veterinary Medicine) in Canada

Commercial pet food does not always provide all of the nutrients that some dogs and cats need to be healthy at different times in their lives. This food also contains things that your pet doesn’t need, such as chemical additives and preservatives. An example of a preservative that is commonly found is propylene glycol. It is used to keep moist pet foods fresh but has been linked to anaemia and bloat.

Look for natural preservatives. These include Vitamin C (ascorbic acid) Vitamin E and mixed tocopherols. Avoid ethoxyquin, BHA, BHT and propylene glycol. Avoid artificial colors. These include azo, azo dyes, and sodium nitrite. Healing With Food - Andrew Jones DVM

Vaccinations

Vaccinations work by stimulating the immune system - the positive effect is to protect against infectious disease. The negative effect can be the host of immune related diseases.

These can include: immune mediated haemolytic anaemia, immune mediated skin disease, vaccine induced skin cancer in cats, skin allergies, arthritis, leukaemia, inflammatory bowel disease and neurological conditions. It is more and more common to see cancer in dogs and cats under 5 years of age.

Most veterinarians just choose to ignore modern research into vaccinations either because they still feel the benefits of vaccines outweigh the risk or because they don’t want to lose the income from giving booster shots to all those animals each year. Bird Flu

Millions of chickens could be killed by suffocation if an epidemic of avian flu in Britain threatened human health. Emergency legislation was placed before Parliament during the May Day Bank Holiday giving David Miliband the Secretary of State for Rural Affairs the power to order “ventilation shutdown” at chicken farms. This would remove oxygen flow from chicken houses. Birds could take up to a day to die, depending on their age and size and the time of year. Death would be caused by a combination of overheating, bird flu and lack of oxygen.

The plan has outraged animal welfare organisations, which are demanding clarification about the method of slaughter. Compassion in World Farming (CIWF) and the RSPCA said that the powers were in breach of standards laid down by the World Organisation for Animal Health, based in Paris. They are demanding to know under what “exceptional circumstances” the method could be used. Chickens could be suffocated in flu outbreak [The Times - 4 May 2006]

Brigitte Bardot

The Sunday Times Magazine recently interviewed Brigitte Bardot. The former actress, now 71, runs the Fondation Brigitte Bardot which she created to campaign for animal rights.

In 1973 at the end of her film career, Brigitte Bardot gave her house to the foundation and sold everything: paintings, jewels etc. to finance the Bardot foundation.

With regard to the British she is quoted as saying "Well done for banning foxhunting. But now Brits come to France to hunt, and the French government is not helping. Chirac used to be a great friend when he was mayor of Paris; now he’s president, he’s indifferent to my campaigns."

So much for politicians then.

Hopefully she is still receiving royalties from her old films (see below) to help with the upkeep of the foundation and finance her campaigns.
